LightSail VR & OpenDrives

If you think about filmmaking as a whole. Filmmaking is the evolution of technology. And you have this beautiful balance of folks who create technology, and then folks who look at that technology and go. I can tell a story with this. And I think that that's the exciting thing for me about VR.

LightSail VR was started back in 2016 when VR was very new. Robert was actually the driving force behind starting LightSail as he shows up at my house one day with a phone and a piece of cardboard. And he's like, Matt, I think this is going to be the next big thing. He goes, Hey Robert, I love this. I'm really into VR, but I'm not seeing any great stories in VR.

You know, Matt tells me, I think we can make a big splash in this space by telling narratives in VR. And since that time, we've just been pushing forward how we tell stories. We want to spend less time fighting technology and want to spend more time being creative. LightSail. When I've designed these workflows of how we want to operate, I've always known that centralized storage is going to be a critical component to how we create content.

Every project we do is hundreds, if not thousands of gigabytes. So we're talking terabytes of data that we need here at LightSail to manage multiple shows, multiple concerts, multiple episodes, all at one time. And then I knew that as we grew and as we scale, we would have to go to the next level. We needed a responsive support team.

We needed the absolute most cutting edge technology available, and we needed speed. That's what I found in open drives. The first project we did at LightSail, the open drives, was actually the faces lady, who was Metis first six part TV show and had a very ambitious schedule. We were pushing every boundary. We had people working in London. We had people working in Atlanta, in Chicago, LA, Portland.

Even the roto team that was working all the way in India. It's such a special thing that we get to work with a team of talented people all around the country. Open drives is like, in a way, the central nervous system to it all, because it's the foundation to all of the work that we do. One of the main reasons that we really like how open drive sets up with all the various different shares is that as we grown as a company and we are working with studios with security requirements, we need to be able to silo things separately so that folks are only working on the project.

They are working. So there's very few certainties in life, but one of the most certain things is we will always need more harddrive space, because VR projects are enormous and furthermore, with our Red Rocks Live in VR concert, we're working with multicam footage now for the first time in our company history. Seven nine 1011 cameras operating at a time that our editor is able to cut in real time.

And it's pretty incredible to have that kind of ability. And that, I think, only makes the work better. One of the greatest things that I love about the open drive system is that it is very easy to scale. So if I know that suddenly I'm going to have double or triple the amount of projects next quarter, I can call my my friends over at open drives and they can have a storage solution for me amazingly quickly so that I don't have to worry about will I have enough storage space in order to meet my clients deadlines?

They understand not only how to build a system for today, but to build a system for the future. I like that because I'm not going to close up shop in a year. I'm I'm looking forward to the next ten years of LightSail.
